Social Mobility Employer Index 2019
The Top 75 UK employers in 2019 who have taken the most action on social mobility in the workplace are announced today. They include banks, engineering firms, law firms, government departments and retailers.
The Index is the creation of the Social Mobility Foundation and ranks the UK’s employers on the actions they are taking to ensure they are open to accessing and progressing talent from all backgrounds. It highlights the employers doing the most to change the way they find, recruit and progress talented employees from different social backgrounds.
The Inner Temple’s ranking is recognition that its outreach work has taken meaningful, evidence-based action to improve social mobility in the profession over the last 10 years. The Inn is acutely aware that more action is needed to level the playing field, and continues to continually improve while working with others to ensure the most talented can access the profession, no matter their background.
The report noted that
Inner Temple continues to visit a good split of Russell Group and non-Russell Group universities, and it’s encouraging that the number and variety of universities Inner Temple visits has increased since entering the Index.
Most importantly, this is having an impact on the diversity of applicants.
The work that Inner Temple has done to review its university visits, and assess who is interacting with you and how people hear about you, is really encouraging. We look forward to seeing the changes the Inn implements as a result of these findings.
PASS continues to be a good example of an initiative to increase applications from those from lower socio-economic backgrounds. Crucially because applicants that have come via this route are successful - with the highest number securing a scholarship in 2019.
