Master Legg died on Sunday 8 October 2023, aged 88. The Inn’s flag will fly at half-mast on Thursday 12 October in his memory.
Master Legg was called to the Bar in 1960 and was made an Honorary Queen's Counsel in 1990. A former civil servant, he worked for the Lord Chancellor’s department his entire career. In 1989 he became Permanent Secretary of the department and Clerk of the Crown in Chancery until his retirement in 1998.
Master Legg was elected as a Bencher of the Inn in 1984. Amongst his contributions to the Inn in 1999, he drafted our original guidance on forms of address, which remains a very useful resource today.
A memorial service will be held at Temple Church on Tuesday 6 February at 6pm.
